Nominated for: BEST Bird Watching
The Wildlife Habitat Committee is responsible for managing wildlife habitat property owned or with conservation easement agreements by Grays Harbor Audubon Society (GHAS). GHAS property management goals are to conserve and promote both private nature preserves for the benefit of wildlife, and timber lands managed for the benefit of wildlife and provide income. The conservation lands owned by GHAS are specifically for wildlife with very limited access for scientific research. Thinks of these lands as “residential areas” for wildlife without trails, roads or disturbances. The other portion of the Wildlife Habitat program is our timber lands designed to create a local model of best management practices where “maximum” profit isn't the goal, and to demonstrate local support for the timber industry in our area. The timber program will provide an income stream to the Wildlife Habitat program to offset the costs of managing these lands, and provide funds for additional property purchases. Grays Harbor county has a long history as a timber producing community, and GHAS wants to be an active part of our county's economic future and providing habitat for wildlife without compromise.

Bottle Beach State Park in Ocosta (half way between Aberdeen and Westport) and the area past the airport in Hoquiam are both amazing birdwatching areas. Westport from the marina down to Tokeland has also been a great place to see all kinds of shorebirds, eagles, and pelicans.
